FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What insurance does the FMCSA require for a new authority?

For-hire carriers hauling general freight across state lines must carry at least $750,000 in primary auto liability, and higher limits ($1 million to $5 million) apply to certain hazardous materials. Your insurance company files proof of coverage with the FMCSA, and your authority will not become active until that filing is on record. Texas intrastate carriers file proof of insurance with the TxDMV instead, which has its own minimum limits.

What is the difference between bobtail and non-trucking liability?

Both cover liability when your truck is not covered by the motor carrier’s policy. Non-trucking liability covers you when you are driving for personal reasons and not under dispatch, with or without a trailer. Bobtail coverage applies when you are driving the tractor without a trailer attached. Leased owner-operators are often required by their motor carrier to carry one of them, and we can help you pick the right one.

What is the difference between primary liability, cargo, and physical damage?

Primary liability pays for injuries and damage you cause to other people and their property. Motor truck cargo covers the freight you are hauling. Physical damage covers your own truck and trailer after a collision, theft, fire, or other covered loss. Most brokers and shippers require liability and cargo, and lenders require physical damage on financed equipment.
